Learn the foundations of watercolour!

This Beginners Watercolour Painting course is aimed at those who are keen to learn about painting in Watercolour.

It is likely that this will be your first experience in watercolour painting although you may have had some experience but are keen to revise the basic building blocks, principles and techniques that Watercolour offers. During these 6 weeks you will be introduced to the most common techniques used in watercolour painting.

Learning the foundations of watercolour painting with expert tuition, and practical exercises in a supportive environment will give you the confidence to develop your watercolour painting skills at your own pace.

Course Outline

Week 1 – Flat washes and simple clouds
To start your course you will be shown the techniques and steps used to create consistent and even areas of colour in your painting. This is an important first step for beginners as these areas generally make up large backgrounds and skies within your paintings. You will also be shown how to introduce different types of clouds to your skies.

Week 2 – Graded Washes
Graded washes provide context to your work. In this class you will be shown how to create gradual changes of dark and light tone and colour to your paintings. Incorporating these techniques will give your painting much more atmosphere.

Week 3 – Layered Wash
Creating depth within your painting is often hard for beginners. You will be guided through how to lift your colours by creating layers in your painting. This techniques proves a richness and complexity to your paintings and enriches your subject matter through colour.

Week 4Wet on Dry
Applying the wet on dry technique to your paintings is a very important skill to master, and one that you will use throughout your watercolour experience. Your tutor will demonstrate this technique of applying wet paint on to your dry paper and how it creates visual texture and enhances your painting

Week 5Wet on Wet
Another important skill that you will use throughout your watercolour experience is the wet on wet technique. In this class you will be applying wet paint on to wet paper to show you the wonderful array of much softer, spontaneous effects and textures can be achieved.

Week 6Lifting Out
Once paint has been applied to paper there are some useful ways to create depth and texture. One of these is lifting out which is a carried out by applying clear water to a brush or tissue and blotting the area you wish to lighten. This can be a very effective technique and one you will master during this class.

What you’ll need:

To join this 6 week Beginners Watercolour Painting course, our tutor suggest that you have the following materials.

A set of watercolour tubes or pans containing the following colours:

Cadmium red
Cadmium yellow
Alizarin crimson
Sap green
Ultramarine blue
Currelean blue
Yellow ochre
Burnt sienna
Burnt umber
Black and white 

A Cold pressed 300gsm watercolour A4 pad, masking tape, drawing board, pencil, rubber, kitchen towel, palette, watercolour wash brush, 1 small round brush for detail and a medium round brush.

Your Tutor

Jaclyn Stuart is an artist who works in St Andrews Scotland. She graduated from Grays School of Art with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 2000. She has taught art in many establishments including lecturing in Further Education. She now runs her own teaching business in St Andrews along with making and selling her own artwork. She works in watercolour, acrylics, oils and inks.
