In this Exploring Ink with Animals and Flowers course you will delve into the different techniques and the way ink can be applied to your drawing to create depth, texture and dramatic effects. Each week Jaclyn will focus on a different technique and guide you through how to successfully apply ink with a step by step demonstration.
Course Outline
08th March:
For the first week of this course you will be introduce to the technique of ink cross hatching with a nibbled pen. Using an owl as the subject Jaclyn will guide you through the steps you need to successfully master this technique.
15th March:
This week Jaclyn will show you how to use a nibbled pen to create a brush wash finish with a lion as the subject.
22nd March:
In week 3 you will have a rooster as the subject to show how you can use flowing ink and salt to create texture and depth.
29th March:
Using coloured ink is a wonderful way to capture the world of botanics. This week Jaclyn will demonstrate how to apply coloured ink to create a painting with as real a likeness to a flower blossom.
05th April:
In this session Jaclyn will demonstrate how to use a wax resist method in order to create a image of a carp.
12th April:
To finish off this 6 week course you will be guided through how to correctly apply Ink and fine liner pens to your painting with a step by step demonstration using flowers as the subject.

What you’ll need:
To join this drawing urban landscape course, our tutor suggest that you have the following materials.
We will be doing some paintings inspired by Chinese and Japanese ink drawing. If you want to ( but it is not essential) you can buy a chinese squirrel brush. You can use your round size 10 brush or any other round brushes. They are not the cheapest brushes but do give you the angles typical of Chinese inkwork. Usually they start at about £15 for a small. If you would like to buy one please let me know and I shall send you a link.)
- Box of coloured water-soluble ink (non waterproof): Link to product

- Rock Salt
- Wax teal light candle
- Black fine liner or black ball point pen: Link to Product
- A round paint brush size 10 or similar: Link to product
- 300gsm hot pressed watercolour paper: Link to product
- Masking Tape
- Waterpot
- Palette
- Masking fluid and rigger brush
- Kitchen towel
Your Tutor
Jaclyn Stuart is an artist who works in St Andrews Scotland. She graduated from Grays School of Art with a BA Hons in Fine Art in 2000. She has taught art in many establishments including lecturing in Further Education. She now runs her own teaching business in St Andrews along with making and selling her own artwork. She works in watercolour, acrylics, oils and inks.
