This expressive watercolour course with Michael is aimed at participants who have done a basic or beginners watercolour painting course and wish to develop their skills and knowledge in a relaxed and supportive environment. Now that you have had some experience it is time to incorporate your very own style.

Each week will explore a different subject matter to maximise the range of tools and techniques that watercolour offers. The painting topics will be selected from the following: trees & foliage, urban landscape, waves & boats, flowers & shadows and changing seasons.

For inspiration there will be various examples of painting styles demonstrated and practical exercises given to enable you to develop your own expressive style.

Course Outline

WEEK 1: Urban Landscapes:

Whether you find yourself perched on a balcony off a town square or sat on church steps in a small village watching the world go by, there is so much to consider when approaching this scene. A common mistake painters make is trying to fit it all in. Using perspective alongside a range of other painting techniques Michael will show you how to focus on particular aspects to ensure you achieve the results you’re after.

WEEK 2: Trees & Foliage:

Next up for this series Michael will demonstrate how trees and foliage can be incorporated into a whole host of different scenes. Whether it is countryside, town or garden you will be shown how to add these to improve your overall painting. With a step by step demonstration you will be guided through the techniques needed to enhance these scenes.

WEEK 3: Waves & Boats:

Coastal scenes are amongst the most favoursed scenes of watercolour painters however, they can pose some of the more demanding challenges. So, Michael has introduced this topic to help you overcome the common mistakes painters make and will demonstrate the correct way to approach these scenes with ease and confidence.

WEEK 4: Flowers, Shadows & Changing Seasons

To finish off this series you will tackle a number of important aspects to cover with your painting. For such a small subject matter flowers can help achieve so much in terms of light and shadow, colour and contrast through ever-changing seasons. Michael will highlight what painters need to look for when tackling these scenes to ensure a successful outcome.

The course will be of particular interest to those who have already taken a beginners course and wish to step up a level and improve their watercolour skills, techniques and experience.
